Understanding Backsplash Pricing: What to Expect

A backsplash not only protects your kitchen or laundry room walls from stains and splashes, but is also an excellent way to make a statement and give your space a premium look. But how much should you expect to spend on a professional installation?

First, what sort of preparation is necessary? Is your kitchen ready for tile, with clean painted or fresh drywall? Do you have an existing tile backsplash, or maybe a backsplash made of countertop material? If existing material needs to be removed, demolition could cost between 500$ and 1000$ for removing and disposing.

The cost of a backsplash depends on several factors, including material, design complexity, and of course the size you would like to tile. For size, most backsplashes range from 25 square feet to 40 square feet. Backsplashes at this size will start around 1200$, and increase if you want to add square footage, whether behind a hood vent, for a bar area, or even a floor to ceiling installation surrounding a door or behind an eating area. For a good ballpark estimate, measure out the area you’d like tiled and estimate a cost of 45$ per square foot.

For materials, there are many price points, and tile can be found to fit the tightest budget, or you could choose artisan, handmade tile to really elevate your installation. Ceramic and porcelain tile are typically anywhere from a dollar a square foot to ten dollars, glass starts at about ten dollars to thirty, and stone about ten dollars to fifty dollars a square foot. “Mosaic” tiles, or tiles cut to a unique pattern, can be had at as little as ten dollars or over a hundred per square foot.

Lastly, pattern is potentially important in budgeting for your dream backsplash. Some complex patterns, such as herringbone or basket weave, can add a lot of personality to your kitchen, but they also add time and expense to your project. Simple patterns, such as a grid layout or a brick pattern, won’t add any cost, but expect other more unique patterns to add between 30% and 50% to your project cost and time.
